Arielle R. Engh, 19, has been accused of helping her uncle flee the country while he was released on bail.

Fred J. Engh, 30, was the head of a criminal organization of shoplifters who stole items from stores and returned them for store credit on a gift card. They then sold the cards to Engh, who sold them online. The crime ring operated for about three years in Washington, Oregon and Nevada. Engh is being charged with over 55 felony counts.

Following his arrest, the Vancouver man was released on bail and his niece allegedly drove him to Mexico. A driver in California who was involved in a small collision with Arielle Engh’s car confirmed that Fred Engh was a passenger at the time of the accident.

Arielle Engh is facing charges of first-degree rendering criminal assistance and possession of methamphetamine. She is being held on $20,000 bail and a Vancouver defense attorney was appointed to represent her. She will be arraigned March 7. Fred Engh is being held without bail in Clark County Jail.

Fred Engh allegedly offered to pay his niece money to drive him to the border, and when they arrived he used the passport of Bernt L. Worrell. Worrell, 31, is being charged with first-degree rendering criminal assistance for giving Engh his passport. Engh has said in court that he went to Mexico for medical reasons, not in an effort to flee authorities. He has not disclosed what his alleged medical condition is, however.
